Week 9: Show Your Resume Around

Showing my resume around has definitely helped me gain recognition on the strengths & weaknesses of my resume. I spoke to professionals from companies as small as Double Zero to companies as big as Suit Supply. I was given plenty compliments on my resume when it comes to company growth & experience but also received constructive criticism as to the lack of detail.

One of the gentlemen I was able to talk to mentioned that in my profile statement I mentioned helping the company through innovative projects yet never mentioned any of these projects. He suggested that I bullet-pointed the most important projects I’ve worked on without disrupting the simplicity of my resume. I need to add more “talking points” as to why I stand out amongst the rest. Currently what my resume shows right now is that I was promoted easily but it doesn’t explain why.

Another individual also recommended that I specify what I did to increase customer loyalty. This way, I would get more opportunities for interviews. She said that my resume would be sufficient during an interview but to get an interview amongst the other applicants, I would need to spice it up a little more.

I am really glad that I had the opportunity to do this activity because it will definitely help me in the long run. Before showing around my resume, I had absolutely no clue what was missing or what I could improve on. Now that I have this information I will definitely re-do my resume. They have also been kind enough to let me send them my resume for review after I have made my improvements.

It is also good that I asked a variety of people from diverse companies because each company has certain things they are looking for that would best suit them. I learned a lot because of this activity.
